October is the month of the Holy Rosary and Marian devotees would go to different churches and dedicate their time praying the rosary in honor of Mama Mary. I am not exactly a Marian devotee but I somehow managed to turn this month into something different from every other October in my life.
With so many things going on and emotions on a roller coaster ride, I found myself doing random things. Suddenly, I found myself on solo adventures that taught me a lot of great things.
Guadalupe Cave, October 10, 2015
After class that day, I realized that I still have ample time left before the Armageddon on Cebu’s streets happen. I have been planning to go to Guadalupe Cave because I have been intrigued by the history of this place.
It is said that long time ago, there was a conflict between the locals as to where the Our Lady of Guadalupe should stay. Due to this conflict and because of the Second World War, the image was hidden in the cave. It seems that it has been forgotten by the locals of what is now known as Barangay Guadalupe. One day, a chicken trapper reached the cave and it is said that light was emitted inside. When he went to check it out, it was a pamphlet where an image of the Our Lady of Guadalupe was painted. Later on, some of the officials of the barangay and the church came to check and that is when the found the image of the Virgin also kept in there.
It is also said that the water that flows inside the cave can heal the sick.
Today, devotees come to the cave to praise the Our Lady of Guadalupe. There are also sick people who come and are bathed with the water from the cave in the belief that this will help heal them.
Outside, there is an open chapel where masses are held. There is also a place for lighting candles.
Inside the cave where the altar of the Our Lady of Guadalupe is kept, one could feel the serenity of the area. When there are not many people, one can freely go inside and touch the image. Visitors could notice that the rest of the cave is dry but the altar has a constant flow of water. This is the miraculous water that the visitors use.
To get to Guadalupe Cave:
From downtown Cebu, ride a jeepney bound for Guadalupe. Stop in front of Guadalupe Church because there are many habal-habal drivers who can take you to the cave. A habal-habal ride will cost PhP50 back and forth. If you are lucky, the driver can also tell you stories about the cave and the image.
Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, Lindogon, Sibonga, Cebu- October 18, 2015
Another solo adventure for me. This might be one of, if not the most, popular churches in Cebu. It is like a castle straight out of a fairytale and here resides a miraculous Queen whose image devotees swear to have healed them or given them their biggest prayer petitions. Apart from the church, there is a museum where different images of the Blessed Virgin Mary are kept. There are also different letters and gadgets from devotees who swear of the miracles because of their answered prayers.
Virgen de Regla National Shrine- All Sundays of the year except for some occasion
The Virgen de Regla National Shrine is the symbol of the Catholic faith in Lapu-Lapu City. There are also different stories of miracles that surround the image. Unlike many Marian images, this image of the Blessed Virgin is dark-skinned. The whole day of Sunday is dedicated to masses.
Carmelite Monastery- Almost every week
This is my personal sanctuary. I have come to known about this place when I was still studying in UP Cebu. I realized that apart from the monastery run by Carmelite nuns, it also has a chapel frequented by devotees of Saint These of the Child Jesus and Santa Teresa de Avila. The patron of this chapel is the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
I love praying here because it is very quiet and solemn. Devotees can also write their prayer petitions down and the monks will pray for them. Those who want to offer something can bring eggs which the monks cook to feed the poor.
